This Week in Year 6
In maths, we have been revising place value in decimal numbers and learning how to multiply decimals by whole numbers.
In English, the children have had the opportunity to write their own wishing tale, using newly taught techniques to engage the reader.
In science, we conducted an investigation on shadows, exploring how they change when an object moves further away from the light source.
This week, we also visited The Old Savoy for a Young Citizen Event, where the children attended talks on railway, water, and online safety. In the afternoon, they took part in workshops covering topics such as reporting crimes, understanding hate crime and its consequences, and learning about personal space and how to be around others.
For the half-term break, the children have been set some maths and SPAG homework. Please continue reading regularly and ensuring diaries are signed.
Thank you for your ongoing support.

As usual, year 6 have been working really hard this week. We have been focusing on our presentation across all subjects. We are putting lots of effort into making our work as neat as possible and are taking a lot of pride in all that we do.
In maths, we have come to the end of our fractions unit and have reviewed our learning. We have proved that we have remembered lots and are ready to move onto our decimals unit next week.
We have completed lots of writing this week. We have worked on engaging the reader through description by using fronted adverbials and dialogue and are now beginning to plan our class finding tale.
In science this week we were fascinated when it came to studying the model of a human eye. We labelled the parts and learned about what each part does.
We also had visitors deliver a mental health workshop this week which everyone engaged really well with.
Well done year 6- have a great weekend.
24.01.25
This week, Year 6 has been hard at work across various subjects:
During our Maths lessons we’ve been learning how to multiply and divide fractions. The children have brought home their new CGP books and have been asked to complete page 42 by next Thursday.
During our Science lesson we continued our experiment on reflection, with some fascinating results! We discovered that foil and sparkly foam were the best reflectors. Next week, we will be learning about the eye.
In our exploration of Anglo-Saxon punishments, we looked at the concept of trial by ordeal. This sparked plenty of lively discussion about how unfair the system was!
In English the children have focused on using semi-colons correctly, crafting rhetorical questions, and selecting adjectives that reflect the mood of their writing and ending the week writing a diary entry for Michu using all of those newly taught tools to engage the reader.
Reminders:
Thank you for your support!

We are very proud of how hard Year 6 have worked this week and the fantastic attitudes they have shown towards assessments. They have completed assessments in reading, grammar, spelling and maths and confidence is really growing. In addition to this, we have continued to learn about fractions and have been working on solving some tricky problems using our newly acquired skills. In English, we have continued enjoying learning our model text 'The Catch' and have been thinking really carefully about our vocabulary choices during our short-burst writing tasks. We also really enjoyed our learning in art when we pretended we were court room artists completing quick sketches of each others posing as members of trial.
10.01.25
What a fantastic start to the new term! We’ve hit the ground running and have already immersed ourselves in our new learning.
This week in English, we began our new text, The Catch. The children have been absolutely fabulous at learning the accompanying actions, and it’s been wonderful to see their enthusiasm during our lessons.
Our new topic in Science is light, this has sparked plenty of curiosity and excitement. We started by exploring the question: What is a light source? The children were surprised to learn that not all objects associated with light are actually light sources. For example, a mirror reflects light but doesn’t produce it, making it not a light source. Their questions and insights during our discussions have been fantastic, and we’re looking forward to exploring this topic further.
In history, we are diving into the fascinating topic of Crime and Punishment. The children were amazed to discover how harsh punishments were in the past and found it fascinating that so many crimes—some quite minor by today’s standards—were punishable by death. We’ve already had some lively discussions about how attitudes to justice and punishment have changed over time, and it’s clear this topic has captured their imagination.
During our Maths lessons, we’ve been mastering the addition and subtraction of fractions. To support this learning, homework on fractions has been sent home. Please remember that it is due on Thursday, 16th January.
Reading: Please continue to read with your child at home and ensure diaries are signed at least three times a week.

What a wonderful, festive week, in Year 6!
In Maths, we have been focusing on creating equivalent fractions and the ability to simplify them. This has naturally led on to being able to add and subtract fractions, even when they have different denominators. The children have worked really hard on this and their growing confidence in this skill is a pleasing development. Please make sure that your child is practising on TT Rockstars as this can really help make wider associations with fractions, decimals and percentages.
What a Christmas performance! The children from Years 4, 5 and 6 put on an excellent show this week. They worked really hard to learn their lines and songs and we are particular proud of the children in Year 6 who memorised their words at home to ensure a faultless production. The children also had a fantastic time attending the church to take part in an Escape Room Challenge as part of their RE studies. They learnt a lot and had an amazing time doing it.
In English this week, we have been putting the finishing touches to planning for our entries into 'The Ultimate Guide to Unicorns and Flying Horses'. The children are now raring to go, full of their own ideas for mythical unicorns and we can't wait to read the resulting information texts
During DT , we are continuing to look at Global Food and how it is affected by trade, economics and other factors. The children get really excited about making Mexican quesadillas and Chinese pancake rolls. This links really well with our Geography topic of Trade and Economics where in this week's lesson they focused on trade links between the UK and El Salvador.
As always, please continue encouraging reading at home for at least 15 minutes per day, and remember to log these reading sessions in your diary.
Thank you for your continued support, in particular, the tuition sessions are proving to be invaluable. New letters will be coming home giving your child's latest test results and plans for more tuition sessions in the new year.

They had a good understanding of the difficulties of the situation and wrote some fantastic letters back home from the perspective of an evacuee.
In art lessons, we’ve been participating in a whole school art project based on the book 'The Dot' Year 6's feature colour was purple and it was amazing to see the children express themselves in such a varied way using so many shades and tones of one colour. It will make a stunning contribution to our school display.
We thoroughly enjoyed our first RE day of the year, this week. We learnt about the process of coming of age within Judaism and then spent time comparing that with lots of other religions. The children were really interested in this subject as it takes place, in so many religions, at a similar age to them. It was fascinating to hear so many children talking so passionately about their own faith and how it compares to Judaism. The similarities in the creation stories were a particular source of interest.
